Why do ADHD and ASD have so many traits in common?

Both of them are declared disorders but still I can temporarily fix some of the symptoms of ADHD through pills and stuff.
Im asking cause I’m genuinely curious, I’m adhd and after seeing all those questions related to my disorder lately, I found the courage to ask this one.

As someone with ADHD, I have a deep interest in understanding the relationship between these two disorders, and I want to emphasize that there is ongoing research to fully understand this topic. But as far as we know right now, both ADHD and ASD fall under neurodevelopmental disorders, meaning they’re related to the development of the brain. There’s a huge overlap in symptoms, like problems with attention, hyperactivity, and difficulty with social situations. Why? Well, many suspect it’s because these conditions are likely due to similar disruptions in the brain’s wiring.

ADHD medications can help with some symptoms because they primarily affect neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, which influence attention and activity levels. ASD, on the other hand, involves more complex issues like language development and social interaction that aren’t as readily addressed by medication. It’s not a simple matter of popping a pill to solve everything.

In essence, despite similarities, ADHD and ASD are still distinct disorders, each with its own unique nuances and complexities. But one thing’s for sure – more research is definitely needed to fully understand the interplay between these conditions.

What a great chance to discuss this question, it is one of my niche interests in life. Here is a link to a Swedish study that identified MAP1A, a gene associated with microtubule structure of brain cells, as shared between people with autism and ADHD diagnoses.

Everybody says they have adhd these days it’s so infuriating. I was diagnosed with it on 3 separate occasions. Once by a clinical psychologist….once by a psychiatrist and then once by another psychiatrist in rehab. I modified my lifestyle….working out everyday…modifying behavior…learning to cope with boredom….joined sports, quit alcohol and 95% on the symptoms went away. Now a new doctor is saying it was all a misdiagnoses. And look at the questions they ask you in the test….those questions can apply to anyone….they are extremely subjective.

I don’t believe any of you that claim to have adhd….it’s all excuses….have you actually tried to change your lifestyle, drinking, being active etc?

Yes some people do legitimately suffer from the disorder. But everyone here on reddit is claiming to have it or been diagnosed with it when 90% of the cases have to do with poor organizational skills and low executive function/planning. I hate to break it to you but you’re gonna have to WORK on these issues which no medication will automatically fix. Whatever you are dealing with can be learned with enough practice and time.

As an autistic person I can tell you that autism is actually caused by the over-sensitivity of the senses. It’s not just one or two of them, it’s all of them. The spectrum is caused by the difference in coping mechanisms. Essentially, the more effectively we cope with our heightened senses, the higher functioning we are. The similarities are caused by the sensory overload and the coping mechanisms we use to deal with them. Different causes but similar symptoms. Kind of like how heat headaches and cold headaches are both enacted by the same organ.

Studies show ppl with ASD or simple term people with Autism usually also have ADHD it comes with the genetic package.

it seems that they overlap in fact it is so common for someone with ADHD to have ASD, but it goes undiagnosed because of how they overlap.
