As an autistic person I can tell you that autism is actually caused by the over-sensitivity of the senses. It’s not just one or two of them, it’s all of them. The spectrum is caused by the difference in coping mechanisms. Essentially, the more effectively we cope with our heightened senses, the higher functioning we are. The similarities are caused by the sensory overload and the coping mechanisms we use to deal with them. Different causes but similar symptoms. Kind of like how heat headaches and cold headaches are both enacted by the same organ.
