Why do airports put rideshare pickups so far away?

I get that they want to reduce congestion but it seems like they would cause less congestion than either cabs or personal cars. And many airports don’t have good public transportation options particularly if you have luggage.

Who is helped by this?

Taxi companies have lobbied airports or governments controlling airports to put the ridesharing app far away. The goal is to increase your chances to take a taxi.

Taxi lobbyists have been pretty efficient at convincing governments to help them by creating quotas that limit competition and giving them advantages like taxi and bus only lanes. They also convince governments and other institutions to be against ridesharing apps services since they are a direct competition to taxis.
