In a sense, Linux is a very generic term. The Linux you are using might be very different from the Linux I am using. This is because Linux is open sourced and hence highly customizable. Windows, on the other hand, is closed source which means you don’t have access to its inner working. You can’t even see its code, much less modify it. Additionally, Windows OSes are largely designed for desktop uses which means it is not that suitable for supercomputers. Although it doesn’t matter much in the context of supercomputers, Linux is a lot cheaper than Windows.
