Why do artificial sweeteners cause gas?

I just ate a handful (ok, I admit, a full box) of sugar-free cherry-flavoured Halls cough drops and realised that I keep passing gas. Please explain why that happens, I’ve always wanted to know.

PS.: first time posting here, I apologise if the flair I picked is wrong.

Artificial sweeteners are made of sugar-like substances that your body can’t digest. However, some of them can be digested by the bacteria in your gut, which produces gas as a by-product. Those that can’t tend to draw water into the gut and give you diarrhea instead.
