They normally have Velcro so that objects can be slapped on them and stay in place rather than float around and damage machinery or people.

Do you mean the belts they wear in their everyday clothing? If so, it’s because loose-fitting pants would just kinda float with a bit of distance between it and your skin and risk a wardrobe malfunction as you moved, in the same way that loose swimming trunks can be blown off as you swim around unless you tighten it around your waist. It also lets them tuck their shirt in to prevent it from floating up to chest-height.
