When I watch a balloon pop in slow motion, the material appears to tear and contract instead of exploding. It seems like if it were to make any sound then that sound should be a tearing sound.

It’s not the rubber skin making the sound. It’s the compressed air inside that is suddenly released and expanding in all directions that you hear.
Who knew my birthday party was just a bunch of pressure waves? Time to rethink my decorating choices.
