Great question! It is not appropriate for any betta to be in a small receptacle or in a vase and expected to exsist on the plants roots. Bettas are carnivore. It’s true that dont need a air pump but it’s ideal to have a filter with a gentle flow. Best case scenario is one betta in 3 gallons but truly it should be 5.
If they are cared for I think they can live up to 5 years but usually a long life is 3 years. Most important are 1)water changes and testing and a filter.
I think i read that 80 percent of fish come with a parasite. I would treat with a medication after purchasing. (see aquarium co op for more info)
