Dinosaurs or their ancestors may have evolved a feather-like coat to help with temperature regulation – compare the fuzzy coats of pterosaurs, which are closely related to dinosaurs. Some dinosaurs went on to develop actual feathers; possibly as an aid to gliding much the way that flying foxes and so on glide today. These gliding dinosaurs developed into flying birds, and their feathers changed along with their needs to become modern birds’ feathers.
