Why do bison/buffalo stampede in large groups?

Lots of heard animals do. It’s often a chain reaction of panic or “herd mentality”. A couple bison go “oh fuck, I gotta get outa here” and even if no others know what’s going on they all go “I have no idea what’s going on but oh fuck I gotta get out of here” and so they stampede in groups.
Can happen out of excitement also
