Why do british roads have a zig zag paint lines? What is it supposed to do?

In the usa we have curved lines that you are supposed to follow to get in a turning lane. Why the zig zeds?

We have zig zags outside of schools or coming up to pedestrian crossing to indicate no parking or overtaking.

If I recall correctly, it’s to help reduce traffic speeds. The zigzag lines make the road look narrower than it really is. Drivers tend to reduce speed in areas they perceive as narrow. So you get less speeding without spending money on speed cameras or other enforcement.
