I’ve noticed that during calls battery on my Bluetooth headphones goes down significantly faster. Considering that Active noice cancellation also uses microphones I don’t suppose it’s the mics that drain the battery during calls?
The microphone draws more power and drains the battery faster than when using just the headphones. Having the noise cancellation isn’t sending the audio to your phone so it isn’t using as much battery.

The Bluetooth has to transmit and well as receive during calls, when ANC is just processing. The transmit is what’s adding to the power load and increased battery draw.
