Why do cables become twisted when pulled out

This happens all the time – you have a nice roll of wire/cable/rope/hose, then you draw out the cable from one end, then it become all twisted and messy. It’s a simple phenomenon but how to describe it intuitively? Other relevant questions – to untwist the cable can you just roll it up again? Do you have to twist it as you roll? Which way to roll or twist?

When you roll up wire, you are introducing a 1/2 turn every loop unless you are rolling a wire in the over-under method where you are 1/2 turning then 1/2 unturning each loop. Check youtube for proper wire rollup technique.
