Why do cardboard cups used for hot beverages become soggy with cold beverages?

215 viewsOther

For example: a normal hot coffee cup (say, from Starbucks) will stay firm for many hours with hot coffee in it, but if you put iced coffee in that same cup it will become soft and flimsy within 15-30 minutes.

Why?

Those cardboard cups are waxed coated on the INSIDE of the cup to keep the drink from seeping through the cup.

But with cold drinks, condensation starts to form on the OUTSIDE of the cup, there their is no protective wax coating, meaning the cardboard absorbs the condensation and becomes soggy
