Why do CCTV cameras always have extremely poor resolution?

I can’t think of a reason why other than the cost but surely it’s worth the potential to solve more crime

cctv cameras are old and cheap but nowadays any new cameras getting installed are going to be digital and much higher resolution because better digital cameras have gotten cheaper and data storage has gotten cheaper. The low resolution for cctv’s was mostly due in part to the fact that the footage was stored on tapes, and then later digital but you couldnt go out and buy a terabyte hard drive for less than a few thousand dollars in the early 2000’s, now you can buy one for a hundred bucks and its an ssd so its much cheaper to store multiple 24 hour days on a hard drive than it was just 15 years ago so it becomes a much better option. Security has always been a compromise between coverage, efficacy and cost, the latter being important for corner stores and other small businesses that might not have $10,000 laying around for a really nice camera setup. – installs cameras and other security devices for living
