why do certain chords in music sound “better” than others?

So I don’t know a ton about music theory, but I’m curious about how this works. Why do our brains like to hear chords that are in tune? And how do we explain why something is tuned properly?

Simply: a generally good sounding chord skips a note between (actually skip 2 half-steps but that is getting too complicated for 5yo)- thus C+E+G is a good sounding chord C+D+E would sound bad.

There are MANY MANY exceptions and “sounds good” is very much the interpretation of the listener.
