Why do certain smells stay in a room or location a lot longer than others?

I’ve searched this sub for the answer but I only got answers that were close to this question (like exact smells) and not the actual way things are in general.

Some smells quickly get into the stuff in the room (like furniture, curtains, carpets etc.), so those things continue to spread the smell even if the original source is long gone.
