why do charley horses happen? Like, how and why would muscles unconsciously contract? And also, would local anesthesia stop a charley horse?

A nerve impingement can cause cramping. The muscle thinks it is receiving a “contraction” signal, but that signal is not originating from the brain, it is coming from a pinch point.
In that case, some walking and stretching can cause it to relax.
