The sh sounds like the s in sugar or sure. The X is the sound you make when you say Shhhh! be quiet! Feel how your tongue is in a different place.

But also, it causes a change in vowels. Xi is pronounced “She” like the pronoun for girls, and Shi is pronounced Shih as in ship.
