Your body is like a city: when it’s healthy, resources can get from where they are to where they’re needed for business to proceed as normal. When you’re sick, the city is literally under attack from a hostile invader. Your buildings and roads are now warzones littered with debris and dead soldiers from both sides. Resources are diverted for the war effort and rationing goes into effect. After the invader is defeated, the damage has to be repaired, so regular activity is badly disrupted for as long as the fight and repair takes.
