Why do compact crossovers have small fuel tanks

I’m curious as to why small crossovers have tiny fuel tanks. I’ve seen the Buick Envista and that vehicle is plenty big enough to accomodate a 15-16 gallon tank to enable it to go at least 600 miles if not more at the 32mpg interstate rating. Why do automakers keep putting 11-13 gallon tanks in vehicles that only allow it to go around 300 miles on a tank. Wouldn’t the bigger fuel tank be the better and more sensible option?

My 2017 Subaru Crosstrek has a 15.9 gallon tank, according to Google the 2024 model has a 16.6 gallon tank, so I guess it depends on the automaker 🤷‍♂️

Because the average person has essentially no reason to need to drive 600 miles without refueling. Even if you go on regular road trips……you probably aren’t wanting to drive 8 hour non-stop stretches anyway.

The Envista’s 13.2 gallon tank lets it go 422 miles at 32 mpg. Upping it to 15 gallons would be 480 miles.

422 miles vs 480 miles is not that drastic of a range difference. Certainly nothing in the neighborhood of the 300 vs 600 funky math you were using.
