why do computer charges have that big block

for example, on my windows laptop, there is the plug that goes into the outlet, some wire, a big block of plastic, and then more wire that connects to the charger that goes into the charging port. why is that block there?

the big block takes the power from the wall (which is alternating current) and transforms it into a form the laptop can use (direct current). If you think of it like a waterpark, alternating current is like a wavepool, very chaotic. Direct current is like the lazy river, a nice constant flow.
