I know it must be expensive traveling around to states and paying staff, but with social media and the internet as a whole, the general public doesn’t need to see the candidates to know their policies. So unless it’s just for favorable policy down the line, why do they donate so much? Are there other expenses besides logistics, pr, and payroll?

Think of the amount of schools, libraries, museums, hospitals etc that could have been made and funded with all that money instead. Such a waste imo
The donation is the same idea as US spending money on foreign countries and aid. They keep the money flowing and make them dependent on it. So the doner now has power to influence what they want by threatening to stop the money flow.
