Legs always bear your body weight. They are more capable of holding an extra 250kgs than your shoulders are naturally.

Because I had trouble understanding this and don’t want it to be unclear to others:

*Why do deadlifters have small legs compared to their chests? Shouldn’t their legs get bigger because they have to bear bodyweight plus the dumbbell (barbell)?*

Depends what you mean by “deadlifters” – most people who deadlift competitively are powerlifters, and full powerlifting competitions also involve the bench press as a competitive lift, so powerlifters train that as well.

It also depends on your preconceptions of how big legs and chest “should” be in relation to each other. If you are used to looking at top (steroid-using) bodybuilders for how big legs “should be” proportionally, then any other (normal, natural) humans will not look like that. I’m not sure how big you expect legs to be relative to chest.

So in general, your question is loaded: that is, you’ve assumed that “deadlifters” have small legs relative to their chest. I don’t know of a reason to believe that’s true in the first place.
