Dry erase markers use a oil/silicone polymer for it’s pigment, while permanent markers use acrylics. The silicone polymer won’t stick to non-porous surfaces.

Pro-tip: If you write on a white-board with a permanent marker, you can erase it by coloring over it with a dry-erase marker. It all wipes off after that.
