Why do e-readers such as Kindle do not have a colour screen?

(Edit) This is specific to the E-ink screens.

So the screen works kind of like and etch-a-sketch. In that there are tiny black particle which are brought to the front of the screen by electro-static forces. Each of these particles represents a pixel and do NOT emit their own light. (There is a back light on some readers, but these particles will reflect ambient light)

In a conventional colour screen, there are red, green, and blue (RGB) sub-pixels which light up at different brightness levels to create the illusion of colour.

Since the reader’s pixels do not have different levels of light emission or reflectivity, there is no point in creating a screen with colour as the different light levels of RGB are required to create full colour images.

Because they don’t need them for simple reading. Basically for the same reason most books are black and white. You don’t need pink, and blue, and green, and yellow to just read. For whatever reason you do need a colour screen, there’s other, better options than an E reader.

The ones that do have colour screens (because some do) are basically tablets and lack all the features that are good about the e-ink screens like battery life and being easy on the eyes.

Because they aren’t designed to have a color screen. They chose to use a different screen that gives better battery life and helps cut costs to keep it cheap to buy.
