Why do erasers get sticky if they are kept in pencil cases for a long period of time?

Today I opened my pencil case (which is made out of polyurethane) after about 3 months of not using it, and my eraser was stuck to the side of it. After I pulled them apart the eraser was sticky. There wasn’t anything that could cause a mess in the pencil case and my pens were fine, so why was only the eraser sticky?

Could be the plasticizer from the eraser leeching to the pencil case and causing the stickiness
