Why do firemen wear such baggy clothes/uniforms? I understand that it’s likely fire-resistant material, but do such large clothes hinder their ability to move?

The short answer is that many layers of dense material are necessary to protect the firefighter from temperatures well in excess of 1000* Fahrenheit, not to mention being waterproof and avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals and other substances. Yes, it’s very heavy and bulky, but there’s really no alternative.
