Why do guys have such messy handwriting?

I’m gonna say from ages 8 to 18 for the sake of fairness here. I understand girls improving faster at first, but even in high school I remember so many guys who could not write legibly all the way through high school. Why is that and is there a way thing could be countered properly? I feel like if the answer was “practice” then 10 years of writing essays in school should do the trick.

Girls and boys develop their nervous system and motor skills at very different rates with different emphasis. Studies have shown that guys don’t really develop the fine motor skills necessary for writing until after they have started school. This developmental lag then sticks because if you learn to do something wrong it’s very difficult to unlearn it and do it right, and basically those 10 years doing essays is counterproductive actually.

Untrue. I’m a teacher, I teach adults, mostly men (specifics of the government institution I work at), and I have seen women with handwritings I can’t even read, and guys or men of all ages with extremely intricate and nice handwritings. I have seen both in both genders, all ages, different upbringings…. It’s not about practice. It’s that some people see “pretty” as a good thing, and some don’t. It’s more about the attitude. same as what is clean to one person is messy to another, based on their attitude and priorities. Young guys don’t care about handwriting as they don’t understand that other people need to be able to read what they write if they want to communicate. To them “no cap frfr” is communication. What do you expect from such a person? And at the same time I know 23 year olds with extremely nice handwritings who also have the attitude of caring, doing their job well, etc.

Situational. I was always told by my teachers that my handwriting was always really good. Which I guess is because the other boys didn’t have good handwriting or that it was just a surprise to them.

I’m sure for some boys it’s just them being in a rush to get it done and over with to play games, browse the internet or go play outside while for others it’s possible it was just lack of practice/care for clean handwriting in general.

At risk of getting big downvoted, this feels pretty r/pointlesslygendered there’s probably other factors that, more generally speaking, are causing certain people to have bad writing and certain other people to have decent writing

I once heard that girls develop fine motor skills faster than boys, so at the age when we’re learning how to write, boys often just don’t have the coordination to do it all that well so the habits we develop then just stick around even when we do gain more fine motor control.

But I don’t know if that’s true

I mean for me it’s my ADHD. I don’t enjoy the process of writing stuff down so I always rush it. As long as I can read it that’s all that really matters lmao
