Why do gymnasts use back handsprings as their main tumbling passes? Is there any such thing as a series of front handsprings?

Not sure about the first part of the question. Bhs are a great way to build momentum to power bigger moves like double/triple fulls. They’re useful like roundoffs to create that pop from the ground–whereas a cartwheel for instance typically gives less pop. Bhs can be chained easily because at almost any point of your landing (and any position–standing, chair, or full squat) you can decide to do another.

Front handsprings are harder to do continuously because of the biomechanics involved–if your timing is off by a split second you end up standing still and your pass is over. Fhs stepouts are easier to chain, but you won’t like see that in competition due to repetition and them not being a challenging skill.
