Why do hospitals inject saline into your bloodstream instead of just water?

If plain water was given by IV infusion it would cause the red blood cells to absorb extra water and burst like an over inflated balloon causing hemolysis as well as upsetting the normal electrolyte balance which would have really bad effects like heart function, muscle function, etc.
