Why do houses in the US need to be fumigated and what happens during this process?

Common drywood termite treatment ( in US, anyway) tent remains in place for two days while home is treated with Vicane gas, then tent is removed & home ventilated for a day before re-occupancy. ( specifically for drywood-type termites; not for sub-terranean type)
