Soiling ourselves during defecation is one of the several downsides to our adaption of walking upright, and it’s made even worse because a good portion of us sit instead of squat.

Most animals use their tongues to clean their butts. I think it’s safe to say i’m grateful my ancestors decided to start wiping.

Just saw a video on this – humans walk upright, so our gluteal muscles are larger than other animals and protrude out, blocking the butthole. Also, animals do have a higher tolerance for fecal matter than most humans. Most humans.

from most of the questions I read here, this one is one of the most childlike one, like a real 5 years old would ask.

so if I were to explain this to a five years old I would answer it like Because we don’t want to walk with leftover feces stuck in our butt hole / cheeks, it’s icky and smelly.

But tbh that’s why different cultures have different method of “wiping” after defecating, some use water, etc. the bottom-line is everyone just don’t want to smell bad and get rid of the leftover feces.

And similar to human other animals do they clean their butt when they feel the need for it

We don’t have to. We do because we like our butt cleaner than animals.
Also our modern diet is not really what we are adapted to and likely our stool was better when we ate high fiber diet.
