Why do humans shed skin regularly in small amounts compared to creatures like snakes, who can shed all at once?

We have a lot of glands and pain and pressure and temperature and touch sensors and hair follicles and…… on our skin. We can’t just shed it and grow a new one. Imagine how much energy that would cost.
