Why do images of bright objects hurt like you’re actually viewing them?

For example: Seeing the sun in a video or seeing images of bright flashlights for flashlight reviews hurts my eyes as if I’m actually staring at the sun or at a flashlight. Why is this? Shouldn’t the brightness be governed by the brightness of the screen?

it’s because your eyes adjust to the brightness of whatever it is you’re looking at. If you were looking at a dark screen and a bright image shows up then your eyes have to adjust, like when you turn on a lamp at night.
