I am watching a women’s lacrosse game and I notice the scorers drop their stick after every score. Is this mandatory or is it done because it’s just easier to high five your teammates and whatnot?

As others have said they check the stick for legality after each goal.
Dropping the stick eliminates any potential accusation of post-goal quickly pulling strings tight shenanigans.
