Why do lacrosse players drop their stick after scoring a goal?

I am watching a women’s lacrosse game and I notice the scorers drop their stick after every score. Is this mandatory or is it done because it’s just easier to high five your teammates and whatnot?

This is specifically a college women’s lacrosse thing. The stick gets checked after each goal to make sure that the pocket is legal (a pocket that is too deep is harder to check the ball out of).

In high school or below, sticks are only checked at the beginning of the game or at coach’s request, so players don’t drop their stick for celebration.
