Why do manhole covers and storm drains have a year stamped on them?

A lot of manhole covers and storm drains have a year stamped onto them. I’ve always wondered why but I couldnt find info online.

I’d assume for maintanance. After so many years they need to be replaced. Easy to keep track off with a year stamped on it.

Probably for when multiple lines are built over time very close together they can which cover is for which connection.

I’m assuming it’s just the casting date. It gives a lot of info about the component itself, its composition, where it was made, when it was installed, its design, etc.

Just curious, how high were you to wonder why the date, instead of why old manhole covers are beautiful pieces of art? Or more importantly why new ones aren’t.
