It is not so in Spain.
Spanish people have two surnames. Default order is first the first one of the father and second the first one of the mother (but can be swapped if agreed, so that mother’s is first).
Wife holds her birth name her whole life and pass it to her children, although it’s (by default) lost in the second generation.
Children and family are talky important to us, but not so much as to lose our own name.
