Why do massages help with pain?

For example, if you have sore feet from walking too much and someone massages your feet, why does the pain go down? How does massaging the body part help with soreness?

When a muscle is overused, the tissue gets inflamed. That local inflammation of tissue makes what is referred to as a “knot.” Manually rubbing the knot (massage, using a tennis ball, etc.,) makes more blood flow to the inflamed tissue, and that increased blood flow can break up the inflammation.
