why do men get the “shivers” while they pee?

1.34K views

Until recently I thought the concept of the pee shiver was a universally accepted fact. However, in a recent conversation with my wife, I realized that she has never heard of this before. I have had the idea confirmed by multiple of my guy friends that have also get shivers from time to time while they pee. Someone please eli5 so I can relay the information on to my wife.

Also a man and can confirm that I have never experienced this before. Are you doing okay m8?

Edit: guys its a thing

*Post-micturition convulsion syndrome
In neurourology, post-micturition convulsion syndrome (PMCS), also known informally as pee shivers, is the experience of shivering during or after urination. The syndrome appears to be more frequently experienced by men.*

Second edit: I posted this as an Instagram poll and it was 50/50, with a pretty even mix of guys and girls on both sides who get it. Seriously, what the fuck is happening? How have I never heard of this?

Man here. I’d also like to know… Not because it happens to me, but because I’ve never heard of this before now.

Ima dude and I can’t say I’ve ever shivered while I’m having a slash unless it’s the heart of winter and the heatings packed in. Other wise I never shiver soooo what?

Its because of an interaction between your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.

the parasympathetic nervous system is in control of relaxing the muscles in your urethra and contracting the muscles in your bladder to allow you to urinate. its also the part of the nervous system that kicks up your “fight or flight” response.

meanwhile, the sympathetic nervous system controlls the bladder function, and is what allows you to hold your pee in. its basically in control of keeping you relaxed, and deals with digestion and other stuff.

when the PNS takes over, and urination begins, that lowers your blood pressure upon voiding. and that, completely on accident, causes a reaction from the sympathetic nervous system.

the sympathetic nervous system responds by releasing catecholamimes such as epinepherine, norepinepherine and dopamine. it is believed that the rush of chemicals is what causes the shudder.

the two are not usually acting at the same time, and it’s a little glitch in the nervous system where both systems are fighting for control.

also should be noted that pee shivers are not exclusive to men. it also happens to women as well.

As a man wtf are pee shivers ?

When you’ve got a lot of water in your bladder, your internal body temperature is at equalibrium. When you expel all that liquid, the water carries the heat away and your internal temperature suddenly drops a little. Your body responds by trying to get it back up to temperature again, which might include the shiver response.

As a woman I get this, too. Is it because your muscles are constantly keeping it held in and when that muscle holding it in finally relaxes you get that “relief” moment in your body? I’m not a scientist or doctor, I’m just guessing.

I always thought it was because i would want to shake off the rest of the pee -esp when nature weeing the shiver is pretty helpful.

Also not a man.

Pee is essentially a lot of hot water. If you excrete such a large volume of heat in a short amount of time your body temperature may suddenly drop a little bit. And as we all know you shiver when it’s cold.

As to why it’s mainly found in men I will make an assumption. Men are generally larger beings so there bladders I assume to be also larger. Maybe then men will excrete a larger volume of hot water while peeing than women, hence losing more heat energy hence shivering.

Just one idea, could very well be wrong. Curious to know the truth!
