Even though in VR the displays are physically very close to your face, the lenses bend the light rays from the displays to be parallel making it look as if the displays are incredibly large and far away. Near-sightedness is specifically the inability to properly focus nearly parallel light such as light coming from far away objects, and that is exactly the conditions VR headsets create.
