Because the image is is generated in front you. Your eyes are focused on the screen that’s close to you; it’s no different than focusing on a picture of a distant object on a TV

I got VR gear for free when I bought my s6 along time ago. It had a focus knob that allowed me to move my phone away from the lenses, so I was able to use it with my glasses. Was a little disappointed that didn’t translate over to new HMD.

the distance in the game is artificial, but the distance to the actual physical screen isn’t

however the screen is far too close for anyone to actually focus, so lenses are put in to correct for this, except the lenses are made for people with normal vision to make the screen focus as of it was far away, so nearsighted people still have to wear glasses to compensate
