There are a few things to consider when looking at new shoes.
1) they are a generic cut and design, each person walks differently and hence the material will bend differently for each person. The more bends the more mailable the material becomes in that area. Increasing comfort for the wearer. The way you walk (your gait) varies from person to person.
2) the material they are made from will settle around the foot. Over time shoes become more comfortable as the material settles around the foot.
3) the stiffness of the sole will change over time. Becoming softer in certain areas and hence improving comfort.
4) in certain sports, like cricket stress is put on certain areas of the foot and the shoe needs to better protect in that area. Initially this will cause blisters etc. they are worn in at those specific areas. Sometimes holes cut for toes etc.
