Why do objects, whose line-of-sight from a mirror is blocked, still get reflected in that mirror at an angel?

For example: if I hold a piece of paper up against a mirror, with an object on the other side of the paper, the object will be blocked in the reflection head on. But if I alter my angle to view from the left or right, the object will be reflected on the other side of the paper, despite the paper blocking it from the mirror. Why is this?

*Angle, dammit lol

Imagine that the mirror is a window, and someone is holding the object up on the other side, with the paper. Of course, if you move your head to the side to see around the paper, you’ll see the object.

Imagine the line from your eye to the object through the window – it’s at an angle that the paper doesn’t block, right? Same principle with
the mirror, except instead of the line going straight though the window, it reflects off the mirror.
