Severe gum disease causes tooth loss, not necesarily old age. It’s just that gum disease tends to develop slowly and old people have had more time for that to happen so they, as a group, have more gum disease and thus lose more teeth. Theres nothing about old age that guarantees your teeth will fall out, that’s just the result of a life of poor oral health. Look after your teeth and you can keep them your whole life.

As you get older, your bone strength and muscle mass diminish so there’s less to hold the teeth in place. Plus a lifetime of decay from food and drink, regardless of how well you brush we don’t have a perfect preservation or restoration system for teeth.
