Why do organ recipients need to be a match but have to take anti rejection meds for the rest of their lives?

Husband got a kidney in 2019 and being on anti rejection meds during Covid-19 has been a little scary. No matter what vaccinations he got his meds made them useless.
I hear we match blood based on 2 types (abo, +-) but there is over 20 things that can match or not match?
It’s never a perfect match, kidney transplant recipient at the start of the year. There are many things that are looked at when deciding if the recipient is compatible, the anti rejection drugs just stop your body killing the foreign body that it does not recognise.
Immune System = very powerful and sensitive to non-self
Transplanting organs from non-self to self is highly targeted by the immune system. Anti-rejection meds somewhat bypasses immune reaction.
