Why do our extremities go numb when the circulation is cut off, but returning blood to the area makes it normal with no lasting damage?

Because circulation is not cut off, that would kill that extremity. The numbness is a nervous sensation. You press on a nerve for some.time and it goes “numb” when there’s no more pressure the brain need to reset that nerve, that’s why it tickles and even hurts (sometimes).
