30M here – my tastebuds aren’t the same comparing to my days back in elementary/middle school. Why?

Do you smoke?

I once heard that as children you need as much energy as possible. Sugar is filled with energy, so tastes phenomenal to children. This effect is lessened as you grow older, allowing flavours other than sugar to be more pronounced.

The number of tastebuds decreases as you age. You start your life with 30000 tastebuds and they slowly decrease to about 10000 in adults and then to about 4000-6000 in seniors.

While this is a normal process, a real difference in taste shouldn’t be felt until age 50 to 60 in men though. So 30 would be considered quite early.

Factors that could influence your sense of taste include: Smoking, Coated Tongue, allergies and as we all learned in the last couple of years COVID-19 and other illnesses, or neurological problems.

Edit: I, for example, had a broken and obstructed nose for a bit over a year and everything tasted pretty different, since a lot of flavour comes from smell.

They are the same. The food is mostly fake, now. That’s why we can’t taste it. If you can find some food that hasn’t spoiled and is somehow 20 years, I bet you it will taste like it did when you were a kid.
