Why do pediatricians recommend against popcorn under 4 years old (choking/aspiration hazards)? How does this differ from other dry snacks similarly shaped, what is it specifically about popcorn?

I believe it has to do with the popcorn kernels. Full kernels can be choked on, and popped kernels still have kernel shells, which can get caught in the back of your throat and, well, also be choked on. Maybe because the kernel shells are so hard to cough out when they get stuck like that, it would potentially be too difficult for a young child to cough out?

Popcorn doesn’t dissolve the way other snacks do and some parts of it don’t dissolve at all.

I’m guessing here, but I think it’s because popcorn is so light that it can easily be inhaled into the airway. If you laugh with a couple pieces of popcorn in your mouth you’ll most likely pull one in.
